VietNamNet Bridge - Recent outbreaks of bird flu epidemic have been attributed to people’s poor awareness of the importance of vaccination and loose control of poultry breeding activities.
Two weeks ago, bird flu was detected in a flock of 60 ducks raised by a farmer in Hoi An hamlet, Da Phuoc Hoi commune, Mo Cay district in southern Ben Tre province. Samples of these ducks tested positive for H5N1 virus. According to Mo Cay district’s veterinary agency, all these ducks were of unclear origin and were not vaccinated.
Da Phuoc Hoi commune sterilized and quarantined bird flu-affected areas and asked local people not to transport, slaughter and buy or sell poultry. Hoi An hamlet vaccinated more than 2,000 out of a total 4,500 fowls.
According to Nguyen Van Het, deputy chairman of Da Phuoc Hoi communal People’s Committee, about 12,000 fowls have been vaccinated. At present, the commune still needs an additional 4,500 doses of vaccine.
So far, the bird flu epidemic in Mo Cay district has been kept under control.
